From first questions to first session

Wondering where to start? This guide walks you through autism evaluations, what to ask your pediatrician, and what happens before ABA therapy begins.

Step one

Getting an autism evaluation

An autism evaluation is a careful, play-based look at how your child communicates, plays and interacts. It's done by a specialist — and getting one starts with a simple conversation.

Start with your pediatrician

If you're noticing signs — few words, limited eye contact, not responding to their name, repetitive play — bring it up at your child's next visit, or call and ask for a sooner appointment. You know your child best, and your concerns are reason enough to ask.

Ask for a referral to a diagnosing provider

Autism is diagnosed through a developmental evaluation by a specialist such as a developmental-behavioral pediatrician, a pediatric neurologist, or a child psychologist. Your pediatrician can refer you to one — and it's okay to ask for more than one option in case of waitlists.

Don't wait on a waitlist

Evaluation waitlists can be long. Get on the list, ask to be called for cancellations, and keep your pediatrician updated. While you wait, you can contact us — we'll help you understand your insurance benefits so you're ready to move quickly once you have a diagnosis.

Why early matters

We specialize in early intervention for children ages 5 and under, because the earlier support begins, the stronger the outcomes tend to be. Seeking an evaluation early is one of the most powerful things you can do for your child.

Questions to ask your pediatrician

It can help to walk in with a list. These questions make sure you leave with a referral in hand and a clear next step.

  • I've noticed some developmental differences in my child. Can we talk about an autism evaluation?
  • Can you refer us to a developmental-behavioral pediatrician or pediatric neurologist for an evaluation?
  • Is there more than one diagnosing provider you can refer us to, in case of waitlists?
  • What should we watch for at home while we wait for the evaluation?
  • Once we have a diagnosis, will you write a prescription or referral for ABA therapy?
  • Can you send the evaluation report and any referrals to us and to our ABA provider?

After the diagnosis

What to expect before starting ABA

Once your child has a diagnosis, here's how getting started with Arise works — most families move through these steps faster than they expect.

  1. 1

    A diagnosis comes first

We need an autism diagnosis before ABA services can begin. Once you have the evaluation report, you're ready for the next step — and we'll help you with everything after that.

  2. 2

    Insurance verification

Send us your insurance information and we'll verify your child's ABA benefits at no cost to you, usually within one business day. You can even upload a photo of your insurance card through our secure follow-up link.

  3. 3

    Assessment with a BCBA

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst meets your child, gets to know your family, and builds an individualized treatment plan focused on communication, social and daily-living skills.

  4. 4

    Therapy begins

Once authorization is in place, your child starts therapy with a dedicated, caring team — in one of our clinics, in your home, or at their daycare.
